At Pets Return Home, our volunteers play a vital role in ensuring the health and well-being of the dogs in our care. If you have a passion for animal health and want to gain hands-on experience in canine medical care, volunteering with us is an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and make a real impact.

Under the guidance of experienced caregivers, you will receive training and develop skills in essential canine care practices. Over time, you will have the opportunity to learn and perform a variety of medical tasks, including:

Medical Assessment & Treatment:

✔ Identifying and treating canine-specific viruses
✔ Recognizing and managing canine parasites
✔ Preventive care for parasites and infectious diseases
✔ Ear and eye inspections, cleaning, and treatment protocols
✔ Wound care: assessment, cleaning, repair, and treatment
✔ Vaccination protocols and administration
✔ Nail trimming and paw care
✔ Anal gland expression

Canine Health Monitoring:

✔ Observing feces for signs of illness or parasites
✔ Assessing body condition scores and weight monitoring
✔ Identifying physical issues such as lameness, infections, or abnormalities
✔ Recognizing signs of pain, distress, or illness

Canine Care Procedures & Medications:

✔ Administering oral, topical, and injectable medications
✔ Understanding common canine medications and treatment protocols
✔ Drawing blood and handling samples
✔ Administering fluid therapy
✔ Taking and assessing body temperature

Safe Canine Handling & Behavior Awareness:

✔ Proper restraint and handling techniques for medical procedures
✔ Understanding stress signals and how to minimize anxiety in dogs
✔ Supporting fearful or reactive dogs during treatment
